Book Review

My Sister's Keeper

My Sister’s Keeper is a sad and life changing story. It makes you think about what can happen in the future. A thirteen year old girl named Anna goes to see a lawyer named Campbell Alexander and asks him to represent her. She is tired of her parents using her to help her sister. Her body is being used to help her sister Kate survive cancer. Her body has been in surgery many times to take things from it that her sister can use to keep her alive. This book made me cry lots and realize that you have to be grateful for who you are, and to realize that you may have problems in your life but you should be thankful that your not someone who could potentially die of cancer at such a young age.

Book review

Lord of the Flies

Lord of the Flies written by William Golding, is an adventurous book. A group of young boys our stranded on an island in the middle of no where after their plane had crashed.  The boys are free from all rules, they have no parental guidance, and there for foolish things start to happen. Ralph one of the main characters is voted chief of the island. He is responsible to keep everyone together and on task. There’s on thing stopping him from being chief and that’s Jack Merridew. Jack is trying to take over the title of becoming chief, because he does not like Ralph. Jack eventually takes over becoming chief and all hell breaks loose. The boys start to become savage and start splitting up. They have all lost their minds, and are not getting a lot. With no parental guidance on the island things start to go bad and even lead to some deaths. I found this book to be interesting but then some parts were boring. Overall I would recommend this book to other readers if they like adventures.

Book Trailers Journal #6

I think that book trailers are a great way for advertising books. Usually people judge a book by its cover, but if there was a book trailer for every book that wouldn’t happen anymore. Trailers are a good way of catching someone’s attention, and making them want to read the book. I would prefer watching a book trailer than reading the back of the book to find out what it’s about. Usually the summary about the book on the back of it doesn’t give you enough information, but book trailers give you lots and it leaves you wanting to read the book!

Spring Break

During spring break I went to Honolulu in Hawaii. It was really hot and the beaches were amazing. I went snorkeling and saw turtles and dolphins. The ocean was the perfect temperature not to hot but not to cold. When I was tanning by the pool or on the beach I would usually listen to my ipod and read my book Sugar and Spice by Lauren Conrad. It was very relaxing and peaceful. I have not finished the book yet but hopefully ill get around to it!

Journal #4 e-Books

I think that E-books will become very popular but libraries will still be used. Many people do not have the money to afford e-books or e-readers; they are expensive ranging from prices 200 and higher. New technology can also be hard to use, people that are older aren’t use to the newer technology and there for would still like to use libraries. Libraries are also free, unless you lose or damage the book. A library is somewhere to go that’s quiet and that you can concentrate on work or just sit down and relax and read a book. I believe that libraries will not lose visitors because of E-books becoming more popular.

Journal #3

My first few weeks of library science have been fun and interesting! I didn’t think being a librarian would be this hard. I have learned how to shelf books properly, how to sign books out to other students. Signing books out to other students is my favourite; I love scanning the books and then stamping them with the due date! What I find difficult is the blog; I have never made a blog before. The first few blogs were quit difficult but after a few more I got to know how to use it more. I would like to learn about how you become a librarian, what do you have to do for education to become one. So far I have enjoyed my days in the library and can’t wait to learn more stuff in library science!!

Journal #2 The Poverty Of Abundance

When I need information for a project I go right to the internet. I find it really frustrating when I go on goggle and type in something that I need information on and a million things pop up! It would be a lot easier if just a few things came up. When I get tired of looking for the right information I go right to the free encyclopaedia, because it usually has all the information right there and it’s the easy way of doing research fast. The encyclopaedia isn’t a good resource though because anyone can make things up and post them on it. I tired using the advance search on Google and it’s a lot easier and way faster to do research on! I will use the advance search from now on!

Review of White Rock Christian School Library Website

White Rock Christian School Library website is extremely organized and has lots of information about the library. It has a list of the upcoming events that will take place in the library. One example is the Grade 4&5 reading link challenge. They have a library catalogue that allows you to search the library catalogue from home and discover research links on their own new home page. If you struggle with homework free online help from real tutors is available through their public libraries. They have a section of books that are free of use for parents, which is unique because not many school libraries have books for parents. How ever the White Rock Christian School Library website is not as detailed as the Elgin Park Library website. Elgin Park's website has interesting video trailers that I have not yet seen on any other school library websites. It also shows how we arrange the books at Elgin; we use the Dewey Decimal system.

Robert Munsch Biography

Robert Munsch was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Fordham University in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and from Boston University in 1971 with a Master of Arts degree in anthropology.
He studied to become a Jesuit priest, but decided he would rather work with children after jobs at orphanages and daycare centers. In 1973, he received a Master of Education in Child Studies from Tufts University. In 1975 he moved to Canada to work at the preschool at the University of Guelph in GuelphOntario. He also taught in the Department of Family Studies at the University of Guelph as a lecturer and as an assistant professor. In Guelph he was encouraged to publish the many stories he made up for the children he worked with. Munsch is known for his manic storytelling methods, with exaggerated expressions and acted voices. He makes up his stories in front of audiences and refines them through repeated tellings. He has said "It takes 200 tellings for a story to get good."His stories do not have a recurring single character, instead the characters are based on the children to whom he first told the story, including his own children. He often performs at children's festivals and appears at elementary schools, sometimes unannounced. He is a bestselling author in both the United States and Canada, and has sold over 30 million books, more than any other Canadian author. Munsch has written over 50 books, and has written several unpublished stories. Some of his books were adapted into the cartoon series "Bunch of Munsch".In 1999 Munsch was made a Member of the Order of Canada. On June 16, 2009, it was announced that Munsch would receive a star on Canada's Walk of Fame in Toronto. The induction ceremony was held on September 12, 2009.

Journal Topic #1

"I just write what I wanted to write. I write what amuses me. It's totally for myself"
~ J.K. Rowling

J.K. Rowling is a popular author who lives in England. As a child J.k. Rowling would often write fantasy stories, which she would usually read to her sister and had aspired to be an author ever since then. She has written the Harry Potter series and has become one of the most well known authors in the world. The Harry Potter books have gained worldwide attention and sold more than 400 million copies. I chose this quote because I respected how she wrote only for herself and didn't let the pressures of others around her dictate what she wrote. The quote shows that she wasn't trying to impress anyone and didnt care what other people thought, she was confident that if she stuck to writing what she wanted to that she would be successful in the end. It also proves that the best literature pieces are those that are written from the writer's own feelings and not something that is fabricated in hopes of entertaining the reader. J.K. Rowling wasn't writing to impress the reader, she was writing to impress herself and by sticking to that moto she became very successful. I felt what Rolwing stated in her quote is something we should all live by, don't do things in life because you feel the need to impress someone, whatever you do should be for yourself and no one but yourself and its clear thats what J.K. Rowling does when she writes.
